Wind Energy Nacelle Data

A number of private companies operate wind turbines to generate clean, renewable energy from the wind and supply it to the local electrical grid. A wind speed sensor is almost always installed on the nacelle at the back of each of the wind turbines in these so-called wind farms. As a condition of sharing such data with NCEP and GSD, most of these companies restrict the data and its associated metadata (e.g. latitude, longitude, and elevation of turbine sites) from being redistributed to the general public so as to protect their commercial interests.
These data are received via a dedicated feed through NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Global Systems Division (GSD).
The restricted nacelle wind speed data from wind energy providers are stored in the NCEP observational database as BUFR type/subtypes
b000/xx020 and b002/xx020.
The wind energy nacelle data may not be redistributed at any time or in any form beyond the confines of the NCEP WCOSS system. In particular, actual data values may not be shared with any other personnel in NWS, NOAA, or the U.S. government, nor with any educational institution, research group, foreign government agency, or the general public.
There is no expiration on this restriction.
