Meteorological Tower Data

A number of public and private companies operate instrumented towers to obtail meteorological information. Many of these are associated with wind farms but not exclusively. These towers are configured with sensors which measure wind direction and/or speed, temperature, and pressure and thus have significant potential use as observational data for atmospheric modeling. While some sites' data are free for anyone to access and use, there are many sites (e.g. wind energy companies) who put restrictions on sharing their data with NCEP and GSD. The NWS has Non-Disclosure Agreements with these companies/entities which restrict the data and its associated metadata (e.g. latitude, longitude, and elevation of tower sites) from being redistributed to the general public so as to protect their commercial interests.
These data are received via a dedicated feed through NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Global Systems Division (GSD).
The restricted met tower data are stored in the NCEP observational database as BUFR type/subtypes
b000/xx020 and b002/xx020.
The restriction:

The met tower data may not be redistributed at any time or in any form beyond the confines of the NCEP WCOSS system. In particular, actual data values may not be shared with any other personnel in NWS, NOAA, or the U.S. government, nor with any educational institution, research group, foreign government agency, or the general public.
There is no expiration on this restriction.
