Previous Monthly Raob Data Reports of Manual Quality Control

SUBJECT: Monthly Raob Data Report of Manual Quality Control

The Raob Report for December, compiled from the Raob Recap statements in the
SDM logs, which does not necessarily include data that were rejected by
automated computer generated quality control, indicates the following:

(1) Reports from 29 U.S. stations (Blocks 72 and 74) were cited at least
once; 12 were cited at least twice; and 3 were cited at least three times.
Of those, the following were cited more than three times or had two or more no
reports:

STATION__ DEL BAS COR XRP EFL SHO TOTAL
                    72235/JAN 6 1 7
                    72248/SHV 4 4

The manual deletions for JAN included three incidences of super-adiabatic
lapse rates and two incidences of strong winds near the surface. In addition,
the entire 12Z report from JAN was deleted on 12/24 due to suspect temperatures
and winds throughout the profile. All manual deletions for station SHV were
due to super-adiabatic lapse rates/wet bulb effect.

(2) Reports from 30 stations in blocks 04, 70, 71, 76, 78 and 91 were cited
at least once; 19 were cited at least twice; and 12 were cited at least three
times. Of those, the following were cited more than three times or had two or
more no reports:

STATION__ DEL BAS COR XRP EFL SHO TOTAL
                    76692/HYY 29 29
                    91348/PNI 28 28
                    78866/SXM 21 21
                    76256/GYM 18 18
                    76654/MZL 10 1 11
                    70219/BET 10 10
                    76405/LAP 4 1 5
                    76679/MEX 4 4
                    76805/ACA 4 4
                    91765/PPG 4 4

Almost all of the manual deletions for MZL, LAP, and MEX were for high heights
and warm temperatures. All four manual deletions for PPG were for super-
adiabatic lapse rates/wet bulb effect. Stations PNI, SXM, and BET reported
numerous ground equipment failures throughout December. Ground equipment
failures from BET were all from the 12th through the 16th, and the ground
equipment failures for PNI started on the 18th. HYY, GYM, and ACA reported
numerous flight equipment failures. HYY reported flight equipment failures for
almost all 00Z cycles throughout December, and GYM reported flight equipment
failures for almost all 12Z cycles from the 1st through the 21st.

* The total differs from the sum of the itemized citations
because of multiple citations in the same raob(s).

Citation Codes Key:
DEL All or part of the raob was flagged for deletion.
BAS A baseline hgt/station press error was corrected or purged.
COR At least one correction other than baseline was made.
XRP Station sent no report at all when one was required.
EFL Equipment failure (codes 10142, 10144, 10158, etc.)
SHO Raob flight was short; ie, to less than 400 mb.
