TITLE: RTOFS_et_WPa initial implementation. CHANGE REQUEST CLASS: Major change DESCRIPTION OF CHANGE: The first implementation of RTOFS_ET_wpa (for Western Pacific) will monitor radionuclide released near the East coast of Japan due to the 9.2 magnitude earthquake on March 11 and the ensuing Tsunami which significantly damaged the Fukushima Dai’’chi Nuclear Plant. The RTOFS_ET_wpa will provide medium term monitoring (2-5 years) of the radionuclide in the Western Pacific ocean. As such, the expected shelf life of RTOFS_ET_wpa is no more than 5 years based on dilution of radionuclide tracer concentrations ( CS-137). The structure of the modeling system complies with the new vertical directory structure being developed under the Environment Equivalency Project. RTOFS_ET_wpa (RTOFS_ET for West Pacific) will provide daily 1 day nowcast and 1 day forecast for radionuclide tracer concentration in the Western Pacific domain caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The initial and boundary conditions for ocean circulation will be provided from the nowcast/forecast conditions of RTOFS_Global system. Since there is limited data to validate the source of the concentrations, there may be a need for resetting the initial loading of the tracers which will require replacement of the restart file. BENEFIT OF CHANGE: The new forecast system under the new vertical directory structure, following the Environment Equivalence Project, will speed up the transition of NWP systems changes/upgrades from R2O, between EMC and NCO, and vice-versa. USER IMPACT STATEMENT: New forecast system. TECHNICAL IMPACT STATEMENT: New forecast system. RISKS: This is downstream application of the RTOFS-Global which depend on successful nowcast and forecast step 1 of RTOFS-Global. There are no downstream dependances for this system.
