In general, you must specify the operating system as an argument
e.g. make OS=irix|linux|linux_alpha|sunos LOCATION=NCEP|PU FORCING=RETRO|REALTIME

(1) for retrospective and REALTIME experiment:

make OS=linux_ia64 LOCATION=PU FORCING=RETRO
 
(2) For NARR forcing (-----currently used in NCEP operations -------)

make OS=linux_ia64 LOCATION=PU FORCING=NARR_RETRO 


copy  VIC-LDAS-preproc-NARR_RETRO.linux_ia64
 to VIC-LDAS-preproc-RETRO.linux_ia64


For VIC-LDAS-postproc
